TAKE THE PRESSURE

Photobucket

... there can be no doubt about the fact that leading your life as a figure of public interest and in the limelight of the media must put you under enormous pressure. This circumstance, however, comes nowhere near explaining or apologizing for John Galliano's behaviour these past few days. And FULL STOP.

He was drunk? He was provoked? He was alone? He had a cold? He had a headache? He had lost his purse? He had left his key at home? He wanted a different life? SO WHAT.

When I'm drunk I don't start yelling things that I would never think or say or feel when I'm not drunk. Things may become more extreme, but they don't appear out of nowhere. As a consequence, what Galliano is reported to have said and, worse, what he said in the video that was published today for everyone to see, obviously didn't come from nowhere either.

And that's more than a valid reason for him being suspended from his duties at Dior. One year ago, Lee Alexander McQueen couldn't take the pressure any longer and sadly disappeared from this world. Some days ago, Galliano inflicted a similar fate on himself. A tragic way to end a talented designer's career. But an end it must be ...

THAT'S so YVES-IL

CARNIVAL X CARNAVAL X CARNEVALE

... apart from the fact that I have always found it quite entertaining how, hopping from language to language, you have to be aware of the correct combination of vowels in the word CARNIVAL (carnaval, carnevale - what's that reference to meat in there, by the way?), I do very much hate that time of the year. Nonetheless, I'd like to bring it to the attention of all my Vienna-based readers that costume rental specialist LAMBERT HOFER has a special sale this upcoming weekend (Friday & Saturday, Feb. 25 - 26, 8 am - 6 pm, Simmeringer Hauptstraße 28, 1110 Wien) where they sell select pieces from their vast archive at special prices. Unfortunately, poor little me will be in Milan and therefore not able to attend this compulsory Faschingsparty preparation event ...

brandnew, and available for pre-order online from April 1st: the 500 BY GUCCI

... Milan, the kick-off of Milan fashion week, celebs galore, and a little engine-driven surprise prepared by the house of GUCCI. An all-Italian dream project, the 500 BY GUCCI was presented yesterday (online pre-orders start on April 1 on this site). Hmpf. First thing, I prefer the original Cinquecento of course, but that doesn't really have anything to do with it. Second thing, the fashion car, not exactly a novelty (just remember the one-off creations by the American designers invited to last year's edition of LIFE BALL in Vienna), why exactly would anyone feel the need to drive it? Wouldn't you prefer to own a pair of Gucci shoes, and drive a "regular" Fiat 500? But we all know that there's no accounting for taste. Anyhow, should you not want to get the entire car, a pair of 500 by Gucci loafers would probably also do the trick. Should be a little cheaper...

don't want the car, go with the loafers? no problem at all ... here they come!

nothing as wonderful and nice as the original, though ...

Okay. Mica male, mica brutto.

FASHION balls

fashion by students Lisa Tritthart (left) and Marlene Büchler, photos: Maria Ziegelböck

... faithful to the tradition of ARTSY FASHION that has been reigning in Vienna since the olden days of WIENER WERKSTÄTTE, fashion professor Bernhard Willhelm courageously delved into the local art scene to look for inspiration (cf. his collaboration with Siggi Hofer on the occasion of Siggi's last exhibition) and a potential playground for his students. Latest result: work by fashion students will be staged in an art performance by GELITIN in Mayer Kainer gallery (the gallery represents both gelitin AND Siggi Hofer, by the way ...) on Tuesday March 8 at 7.30 pm. Should be funny, so check it out (still, I can only wonder what exactly his students make of such performances and whether the whole thing isn't a trifle too trashy - who knows. I'll go there and check out the performance, afterwards I shall know more) ...

ALMOST FESTIVAL TIME

Hyères 2011 finalists: Juliette Alleaume & Marie Vial / France ; Mads Dinesen / Denmark ; Michael Kampe / Germany

... one of the world's most important fashion festivals, the FESTIVAL DE LA MODE ET DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE in Hyères, France, just published the shortlist of ten designers that will participate in this year's edition of the festival at the end of April. Contrarily to previous years, when young designers from Vienna seemed to occupy an prominent spot on the radar of juroy members, no Austrian fashion label has been chosen for the final. Interesting detail: the fashion platform NOT JUST A LABEL once more reveals itself as one of the true hot-spots for everyone looking for fresh talent. Designer MICHAEL KAMPE from Germany is part of the NJAL racing team. And of course, NJAL is absolutely noteworthy in fashion award terms since it is the official partner in the upcoming edition of the astronomically well-backed MANGO fashion award EL BOTON and co-hosts the selection process of finalists over there ...

Hyères 2011 finalists: Maryam Kodbacheh / NL ; Oriane Leclercq / Belgium ; Oda Pausma / NL ; Léa Peckre / France

Sorprendentemente incontornabile, questo sito, no? ...

UNDERGROUND calling

... good news from good old Vienna, or London, depends on how you look at it. Since I don't really think it makes sense to pretend that Marios Schwab or Peter Pilotto are part of the "Austrian fashion scene" (whatever it may be, whoever may want to be part of it and wherever it may take place), I think it's all the more interesting to hear that WENDY & JIM, no strangers to returning readers of ParisVienne, will showcase their autumn/winter 2011 collection UNDERGROUND in London. Sounds like a perfect match, right? The venue promises to be really interesting: THE OLD VIC TUNNELS is performance space beneath Waterloo station (just perfect for travellers arriving from Paris, then...) which was opened for the premiere of Banksy's Exit Through the Gift Shop. Be there or be square on Feb 22, 4 pm - 8 pm at 35 St Martins Street WC2 ...

MARTIN MARGIELA x OPENING CEREMONY

... just a quick word, or even, only some images from the collaboration that was announced yesterday for fall 2011: MM6 MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA will create a capsule collection for New York-based retailer Opening Ceremony (and thus follow in the footsteps of the Rodarte sisters...). Well, looking forward to that we are, aren't we? And, lest you should wonder, there is even a cross-reference to my last blog post, as Austrian-French designer Michaela Bürger is also represented by OC ...

Troppo perfetto, no? ...

IN LOVE WITH BHV, pt. 1

... when in Paris, I do my best not to miss out on the wonderful, wonderful basement (!) of the legendary "magazin généraliste" that is the BAZAR DE L'HOTEL DE VILLE, which is , the name tells it all, situated right opposite the beautiful townhall on rue de Rivoli. Okay, admittedly, one could say that its proximity to the nearby Marais also makes the basement a cruising area for some. But believe me - my motifs for going there are of a much simpler, down-to-earth nature. So let me assure you, the basement is some kind of Ali Baba's magic cave, filled to the brim with surprising, superb, select objects. Such as, for instance, the ever-so-lovely keyrings labelled with whatever could be openend with a key: the bike (vélo), the caravan (caravane), a boat (bateau), the pharmacy (pharmacie). Just perfect for any ambitious student of the French tongue, don't you think ...

... I don't know just HOW familiar you are with the legendary Hermès building on 24, rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré in Paris, but should you one day happen to FLY OVER the building, you'll notice the little garden on its rooftop. Sure enough, the garden was the inspiration for Hermès' nose Jean-Claude Ellena when he created the latest fragrance for the French maison, "un jardin sur le toit".

ETOILES DU CIRQUE

... how great it is that we're getting some first and timid glimpses at the fact that winter will actually end one day and we'll spend more time outdoors. Recently I discovered this public artwork by Basim Magdy, entitled "One Day We'll Shine Like the Stars" in Vienna. And even though I'm not too fond of the idea that the institution taking care of Vienna's public art scene dedicated a parcel of land to showcasing artworks, thereby turning it into a PUBLIC ART SPACE (and sometimes bluntly exhibiting works created for galleries or museums), here we go, you never know whose mind may take a liking to art because he or she incidentally bumped into an artwork. Not too sure about Magdy's installation of a circus carriage complete with spacemen and straw, either, but then again ...

SHADES OF VRED

US (and Harper's Bazaar before that) was always on the outlook for the perfect shade of RED? Well, sure enough she was ...

WATER FOR THE PLANTS, TOKYO STYLE

... when a nighlife guru, author and self-proclaimed bon-vivant publishes a book about HIP PLACES in Vienna, the result may vary. Anyhow, Nikolaus Schrefl did just that and invited Viennese celebrities to let him in on their secret wanderings. Martin Siebenbrunner photographed representatives of the city's ALPHA COMMUNITY (I'm quoting from the press release, mind you), and hear hear, fashion designer Hermann Fankhauser/Wendy & Jim, invites readers to join him on a John Harris treadmill. FIFTIES CAPITALS

... when I recently went to VENICE (and I positively adore Venice, like it better every time I go there, and how wonderful it is to go there neither for the sake of the arts nor for that of architecture, but for mere, pleasurable strolling around!) I came across this wonderful vintage Paris city guide in a second hand bookshop. Marvellous, just marvellous. And you know what, it still serves its purpose, more or less. Well, I had to buy it, and sure enough, I put it on a side table in my flat, next to my very useful "English Intepret" - a very well preserved language course that would match Holly Golightly's fondness for language learning. And is filled to the brim with clichés of the most extravagant kind ...

For good old time's sake ...

Mmmmmmh ...
