CHRISTMAS in the NUDE

this is the artsy Christmas tree premiere at Belvedere, photo: Peter Hautzinger for Belvedere

... I'm talking about the COLOUR, not the state of undressed-ness, mind you very much. As a matter of fact, the Austrian art combo gelitin (formerly known as: gelatin) were invited by the director of the Belvedere art museum, Agnes Husslein, to create the first in a row of artist's Christmas trees (the other ones will follow in the years to come, should you wonder). Since Mrs Husslein already invited gelatin (which was the correct name back then...) to create a site-specific installation outside the Rupertinum in Salzburg some years ago, the "Arc de Triomphe" which had to be removed after very vehement protestations kicked in, the "Nude-cloured Christmas tree" kind of rings a bell. Or is it just me, again ? ...

boy, what a scandal that was, back then, in Salzburg - the "Arc de Triomphe" had to be removed, as a matter of fact; photo via gelitin.net / Museum der Moderne Salzburg

BAGS, jewels, POSTERS

Oink oink - and so fashionable. Timeless beauty. Or just a joke?

... everything at the same time, and a lot of it: such seems to be the motto of Vienna's Museum of Applied Arts MAK when it comes to putting together the season's programme. Comes in handy for visitors, since you can attend two openings on one evening, for example. This I did last week when I went to the vernissage of "100 posters from Austria, Germany, Switzerland" and realised that the "Eligius Jewellery Award" show opened that very evening. And, once I was there, I didn't miss the chance to check out the wonderful array of handbags selected for "Leather, Fabric, Zipper". I mean, isn't Carol Christian Poell's piggy bank, sorry: poach, just marvellously, humorously irresistible? I do think it is ...

Melanie Sinnhofer, "Hairy Fingernails" - shop window performance, 2009 -
part of the jewellery exhibition, should you woonder ...

"Off the beaten track", je dirais. Et une fois que j'y étais, je n'ai pas voulu rater l'expo "Sac à mains" qui, elle, n'a pas été inaugurée ce soir-là. Tout à fait ravissant, tout à fait ...

Ulrich Reithofer, "the tell-tale heart", 2008

This poster reads: "Not all was bad about capitalism" and is really funny. It was commissioned by the people of Berlin's infamous Kreuzberg district. Tel maître, tel fils.

W<ER in VIENN&

... quick, quick note (time, pressure, stress!!!) - Mr Walter van Beirendonck, a long long time ago part of the fabulous fashion pack known as the ANTWERP SIX (with a very distinct kind of aesthetic that set him aside of the rest of the lot) will be in Vienna on Thursday - in person. He was invited to put together an exhibition for Song Song. PARADISE PLEASURE PRODUCTION remains open until January 15.

BRILLIANT VIEW

... usually, I wouldn't really be posting this. But on the other hand, where there's no rule, there's no exception either, right? I am quite prepared to admit that I have a weakness (and, to put it quite simply: need) for nice-looking eyewear - even though I prefer not to disclose where I usually buy mine... -, so maybe it did not come as a surprise when a dear colleague brought to my attention THIS, uhm, object. Something for Miss Blica, maybe, given how intensely she has repeatedly been pondering over next season's frame-shape. Or rather, isn't this just a clear-cut case for DIY on long winter evenings? Would you actually want to buy these glasses? Well, I'm not too sure about that ...

NEW NOUVEAU NUOVO

... after interviewing him three years ago (time goes by anything but slowly, I can tell you that...), I already had a certain idea that Siggi Hofer is in no way averse to the world of fashion and style. And since we are witnessing a certain Bernhard Willhelm craziness in this city, it's only logical that one of the most widely recognised artists from Vienna's up-and-coming scene (=SH) turned to the "fashion professor" (=BW) for the outfit he wears in the ad/invitation to his latest exhibition (opens on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at Galerie Meyer Kainer, btw.). "The new Siggi Hofer" sports a BW-total look, and is photographed by Maria Ziegelböck. Is it fashion, is it irony, is it art - and, last but not least, do we like it ? ...

immediately after the exhibition opening, Siggi Hofer will launch his book "Fallende Bäume" (Falling Trees") in Rauchsalon, Gumpendorferstraße 47, 1060 - on Tuesday Nov. 16 from 10 pm - more information here ...

SWEET fashion

... some days ago, I received this very fascinating fashion news item: Austrian fashion wunderkind (well, "kind", but you know...) Lena Hoschek, who I recently featured as the author of a cheesy and mountainous style blog, recently dedicated her creative might to the world-famous sweet producer PEZ. Probably when brwosing through images from the PEZ archive of vintage advertising motifs, Mrs Hoschek must have found the 1950s inspiration which totally matches her personal fashion aesthetics AND current fashion trends - and created new party dresses for the stylish "PEZ ladies" (who I have never met, but that doesn't mean anything - and may be about to change?) ...

photo: Friedrich Jamnig

SECRET garden

... was walking around town today, actually had just picked up some theatre tickets and was on my way to Vienna's "City" (haha!) when I passed by the Institut Français de Vienne and my look was caught by these, well, let's call them "photo installations", why not, on the fence surrounding the garden of beautiful Palais Clam-Gallas (which never fails to awaken some memories from my early days at university, as a matter of fact). So far for efficient pr initiatives - there you had the huge photos alright, but nothing pointed out that they belonged to the photo exhibiton Horizons sporting work by Antoine Gonin which will open at the IFV tonight in the context of Eyes On, Vienna's month of photography. The exhibition will remain open until November 30.

ON TOP

... I'd already mentioned this special collaboration between Austrian menswear designer and the UK-based retailer Topman earlier this year, whe their joint project was about to be launched. Now (and I've got a piece in the newspaper about this today), the Fashion Lens by Ute Ploier collection has hit the shop floor and Topman's online shop.

KNIT KNOT

... thou shallst knit, said Her Sustainable Highness Cloed Baumgartner, and therefore she created the fun-loving knit group GRUPPENSTRICKEN, which henceforth unites every Tuesday in Café Muskat at 6 pm. A wonderful occasion to overcome your traumatisms from primary school, if you know what I mean ...
