CAR SPOTTING Fiat 124 Sport Spider

... spring is definitely a better season for car spottings than winter, so here we go: this beautiful specimen of a Fiat 124 Sport Spider adorned the streets of Vienna. Said car was produced by Pininfarina for Fiat from 1966 to 1985, and a special edition signed Abarth was conceived in the early 70s. Such a classy "macchina italiana", don't you find ...

SAVE some DATES

... spring has sprung, and Vienna's fashion folk gets it going, which means that some sample sales, pop-up shops and collection presentation parties are budding all over the place. On April 20, 21 and 27, darling Christiane Gruber will hold special sale afternoons in her studio (Goldschlagstraße 8, 1150 Wien) starting at 3pm. The Diptych girls Valerie and Ali will open a temporary store from April 26 through 29, from noon to 8 pm on each of these days (Am Getreidemarkt 11, 1060 Wien). And finally, ever energetic Ayo van Elmar presents her spring 2012 collection during a party on April 27 from 8 pm at Reinberg Bar (Kolingasse 7, 1080 Wien) ...

... love is in the air, non, attendez, spring is in the air, enfin bref, le printemps, l'amour, la mode !

PILOTTO in Salzburg

all images courtesy of Schneiders

... one of the most promising fashion designers (if not the most promising right now...) who are somehow linked to Austria is the Tyrolean designer Peter Pilotto, based in London of course. So it was about time that an Austrian fashion brand became aware of the option to collaborate with this gifted young man. The Salzburg-based brand Schneiders recently announced they would intensify their already existing collbaoration with Mr Pilotto and launch a co-branded outerwear collection in fall 2012. The inspiration, Peter tells us with a short statement, were striking landscape features in the Salzburg region as well as the particularities of the richly structured loden material. Definitely looking forward to this one, and a nice little gadget for all Pilotto co-branding aficionados (remember the bags he designed for Kipling?) ...

ANYTHING BUT a waste of paper

courtesy of Frau Ober

... not only does Vienna (finally!) discover the manifold possibilities of exhibiting fashion in 2012 (there is the Katarina Noever exhibit at Wien Museum, there is the furniture and fashion design from the 60s exhibit at the Imperial Furniture Collection museum), the paper dress is also unearthed as a fashion statement from the past. I told you about Frau Ober's creations for the Sixties show, and now Gerda Buxbaum put together a rather interesting array of fashionable dresses made of newspapers (I'm delighted, for obvious reasons) for the shop-window of Swarovski's Viennese flagship store. May the paperworks go on ...

sexy newspaper arrangements by G. Buxbaum for Swarovski

MIND YOUR words (a fashion scandal)

a photo of the incident as reproduced by
the Italian newspaper "Repubblica"

... mind your words indeed, and be they on a t-shirt. A scandal regarding Italy's current welfare minister Elsa Fornero was caused by the anonymous wearer of a t-shirt sporting the slogan "Fornero al cimitero" last week, which means as much as "Fornero to the graveyard". What's worse (or rather, what really made things bad) was that Oliviero Diliberto, a left-wing politician who served as minister of justice back in the 90s, posed with the stupid t-shirt woman. Now you may, or may not, be aware of the fact that there was quite some turmoil in Italian politics last week after a law project was passed by the current government which would grant companies greater freedom in sacking their employees, with Mario Monti and Elsa Montero being on the forefront of this very project. Independently of the exact nature of this law (critical though it may be viewed, no doubt about that!), I consider it of very bad taste to go around more or less wishing someone their death by what you've got written on your t-shirt. And, worse still, that a politician should pose for a photo next to the person wearing said t-shirt. This is definitely not a case of the stupidity and senselessness we are abundantly familiar with from myriads of commercial slogan t-shirts. This one was custom-made for the occasion, and the wearer expresses her opinion about minister Fornero in a very explicit and totally inappropriate manner. What's even more inappropriate, of course, is the fact that left-wing politician Diliberto sees no harm in posing with this woman. It is therefore totally understandable that Fornero should have expressed her concern and disgust in a ensuing press release. That said, I would like to quickly remind you of what was probably the most prominent and efficient appearance of a garment sporting a poignant slogan in a very political context - I'm talking about Katharine Hamnett's (and she is of course the master of slogans in fashion) hand-shake with Margaret Thatcher in 1983, when Hamnett made it very clear that she sympathised with the 58 % of the German population who didn't want Pershing missiles to be stationed on German territory ...

SARTORIALIST meets eBay

"soon-ish" meaning, according to Sari Bibliowicz,
a beta version to launch in March, a full-fledged launch soon thereafter

... for an article in which I recently looked into innovative e-commerce solutions (the main focus was on on pre-order concepts like Moda Operandi and Couture Society) I caught up with Sari Bibliowicz from the soon-to-launch, New York City-based website Bib + Tuck. There was quite some buzz surrounding this website earlier on, after Vogue.com published a piece about it in October. Six months on a beta version of the marketplace is about to launch.
So here comes the full-length English language version of Sari's answers to my questions, for all you fashion-obsessed clothes traders out there ...

to create some buzz prior to the actual launch,
the "Fashion Forward" project was a collaboration
with ten of Bib+Tuck's favourite stylists/designers/bloggers

What exactly is Bib + Tuck?
Bib + Tuck is an exclusive online trading community for the fashion obsessed. Our hope is to bring together the hippest fashion bloggers, photographers, stylists, trendsetters, and good-old fashionistas to exchange their clothes, shoes and accessories.

Surviving in the city and staying stylish means understanding how to do more with less (space, time, and money). At Bib + Tuck we are anything but daunted by this task, it’s what really excites us! Even if we did have a millie to re-swag our style, we’d still be intrigued by a great swap. Trade my once-worn Manolos for last season’s Balanciaga Bag? Yes please!

In a city that’s got plenty of people willing to drop thousands for the new “it” item, we define ourselves not by the pieces we own, but how we wear them. Bib + Tuck is about fashion, creativity, and resourcefulness, minus the hassle and dank smell of a second hand store. It’s curated for us and by us, and it’s our favorite place to shop!

How and when exactly was the idea born?
They say necessity is the mother of invention, and we’ll admit it was our insatiable appetites for fashion that drove us to create Bib + Tuck.

As five recent grads living in the same building in NYC with no closet space to spare, having access to each other’s fantastic wardrobes meant we suddenly had endless options! Bib + Tuck is our way of expanding our style options without having to increase the size of our closets. We style the pieces we once loved so that they can be someone else’s inspiration, and browse each other’s profiles for something that inspires us! Our endless goal is to do more with less.

What's unique about Bib + Tuck with regard to other marketplaces?
a) We are invitation only and we take this seriously. It is not easy to score an invite and we want to keep our community exclusive and master our demographic – composed of creative, style obsessed individuals with an enviable closet.

b) It’s not like any of the peer to peer marketplaces out there. It’ visual, it’s style, it’s inspiration, it’s creative. It feels like thumbing through your favorite blogs. We like to think of ourselves as ‘The Sartorialist meets eBay’. We’re not just about the clothes – but about the people behind the clothes – it's a way to approach marketplaces that hasn’t been done before.

c) No money involved aside from shipping and a small transaction fee. Its like shopping at your fave website, but for free. d) The swapping is not one to one, you “sell” an item for virtual credits and then use those credits to “buy” from someone else.

How do you assure quality control?
By curating and being selective about the people on the website, we decide who gets an in and who doesn’t, creating a trusted community of like-minded individuals who all have the same goal; to replicate the experience of shopping in their sister’s closet. We also allow users to “report” an item if they feel it is misrepresented in any way. On our end, we will monitor all items closely and take strict measures on any fraudulent activity.

How do plan to make money with Bib + Tuck?
Lets face it, we have to make money to keep the site running. We keep it simple and transparent: $3.00 per transaction. No selling fees, no listing fees, no hidden fees. We use PayPal, a trusted source, for every transaction ...

PARIS, aller et retour

... it's been a bit calm on ParisVienne because, what can I tell you, well, because I went to Paris for the Semaine du prêt-à-porter, and things had been rather hectic before that, and they still are and will continue to be. ANYHOW, Paris was delightful, I interviewed some very interesting people and chatted with quite some Austrian designers and, well, I'll let you know more asap ... récemment, ParisVienne a été un lieu (virtuel) un peu plus calme que d'habitude, que puis-je vous dire, c'est à cause de la semaine de la mode à Paris à laquelle j'ai assisté, c'était excitant comme toujours, surtout parce que j'ai pu interviewer des designers très intéressants, et m'entretenir avecc d'autres gens encore, enfin bref, je pense que je vais vous en parler le moment venu ...

... the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne is situated on Rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré, just opposite the French president's residence, the Palais de l'Elysée, and even, as Didier Grumbach once told me, Fédération française de la couture is looking down on the palace as it's on the second or third floor, can't remember ... vous le saurez si vous habitez à Paris, je vous le dis au cas où vous n'y habitez pas, la Chambre syndicale de la couture parisienne est située juste en face de la résidence du Président de la République, sur la rue due Faubourg St Honoré, et les bureaux de la fédération sont même situés au-dessus du palais de l'Elysée, comme m'avait signalé Monsieur Didier Grumbach il y a désormais presque deux ans ...

... oh I know that there are many people who were not so fond of Formichetti's latest outing for the Mugler brand but I wouldn't really go as far as declaring it outright trash, don't you agree that this would be a bit harsh?

LET IT swing

Verner Panton's fantasy landscape Visiona,

shown in Cologne in 1970,
(c) Verner Panton design

... I know, I know - the overall originality of this post's title comes dangerously close to nought. Well, but what matters is the *information* I shall now provide you with: finally, some good design exhibitions are opening in Vienna, the next one being dedicated to the SIXTIES, and that's also the title of the show put together by the furniture museum of the Imperial Furniture Collection (no imperial pieces to be found in this precise show, that's for sure). Opening on February 29 and curated by Markus Laumann, the show will present an overview of consumerism and plastic frenzy in the 60s, the main focus is on furniture but some noteworthy fashion items will also be displayed. For example a Courrèges ensemble and, as far as I know, a dress by Paco Rabanne. Unfortunately, the attempt to bring some original Pierre Cardin pieces to Vienna failed. What will greatly compensate for that: children can participate in MAKE YOUR OWN PAPER-DRESS workshops (on March 4 and 18, April 15, May 20, June 3 and 17), the paper-dress prototype (clearly inspired by Yves Saint Laurent's Mondrian collection from 1965) was created by Frau Ober and all in all I must say, that's such a marvellous idea ...

a marvellous paper dress created by Frau Ober,
the inspiration is Yves Saint Laurent's Mondrian collection

image courtesy of Katarina Noever (depicted herein)

... some weeks ago I met up with the wonderful woman that is Katarina Noever, former model, design expert and shop owner, communicative supporter of contemporary music etc. She really is quite an outstanding personality in the Viennese cultural landscape, and she has been just that since the 1960s. Anyhow, the historical museum of the City of Vienna, Wien Museum, currently hosts a fashion exhibition focussing on Mrs Noever's fashion collection (my review of the exhibition, in German, here), and as part of the side programme a special kind of flea market with extravagant specimens of 60s and 70s fashion provided by Ulla Holzbauer and Elisabeth Pichler-Campos will take place this upcoming weekend, on February 25 and 26 at Wien Museum on Karlsplatz ...

OF MONUMENTS and/on heads

Vienna Awards campaign visual (detail)
art direction by peng!

... just look what I received yesterday: this, ladies and gentlemen, is the official campaign visual for this year's edition of the Vienna Awards for Fashion and Lifestyle ceremony taking place later in spring. The idea was to put a gilded model of Vienna's landmark St Stephen's cathedral on the model's head. Looking at the whole thing from a ParisVienne angle, there are two things I'd like to remark. First, I'm a big fan of things other than hats being put on people's heads, for example a bag, as Aya Nonogaki did some years ago. Plus, the image kind of rings the Laetitia Casta seen by Jean-Paul Goude for Galeries Lafayette bell, doesn't it? All the better, you'll tell me. And there is something else still which I wanted to tell you about in any case, so I'm really grateful for the occasion: my favourite and all pink, all Viennese chain of pâtisseries, "Aïda", recently launched its own version of St Stephen's cathedral - made of cho-co-late. That would have looked nice on the girl's head too, right? ...

Laetitia Casta by Jean Paul Goude for Galeries Lafayette

all that PAPERWORK

all images via www.papernomad.com

... such a brilliant idea, and quite sustainable, too - the guys from the Austrian design label Papernomad developed a special kind of paper (resistant to everything, apparently, and yet totally paperish in terms of biodegradation) which they use for laptop, ipad, ipod, iphone sleeves. The extra bonus: Papernomad products reach out to creative people (and EVERYONE is creative, remember?) because they are explicitly designed to become the carriers of your doodling, scribbling and drawing. Hence the "tell us your story" slogan - which you should do through their website ...

HALF MAN, half woman

a girl's style created by Un Demi for Insight 51

... given the outstanding quality of their work, I'm not surprised that the art/graphics collective UN DEMI, consisting of Chloé Thomas (based in Vienna), Laure Boer, Anne-Pauline Mabire and Lucie Pindat, has a steadily growing number of fans all over the globe. Their eponymous magazine, 1/2 is a feast for the eye, and every now and then there are special collaborations that mark the appearance of UN DEMI in adjacent areas - for example fashion: two t-shirts with motifs created by the art collective were produced by the Australian fashion label Insight 51, I find that rather amazing ...

A PERFECT prototype

... for the article I recently told you about I also talked to Denise Gould-Salmi, the daughter of architect Walter Gindele. His case is totally different from, say, Carl Auböck, as his work is definitely in danger of falling into oblivion. Even though he built the landmark highrise that houses the daily newspaper Kurier in Vienna's 7th district, Gindele's is not a household name. His daughter recently sold his house (I saw some photographs, a truly amazing building from the 1960s that faintly reminded me of John Lautner's houses in Beverly Hills), and it is going to be torn down. A prototype for a chair designed by Gindele will be auctioned by Dorotheum on February 29, isn't it a beautiful piece?

MAC money sack

Auböck's "money sac" - quite classy indeed, don't you think?

... throughout the past few weeks I did rather extensive research for a long article that came out last Sunday and looked into the situation surrounding the reception of Viennese design from the 20s through to the 60s. What's pretty fascinating, and also rather worrying, is that there are only a few household names and a lot of designers and/or architects about to fall into oblivion. One of the people I met during the research period was Carl Auböck, who continues to run the studio specialised in metal work that was founded by his great-grandfather. Carl Auböck main job is that of an architect, but he also designs some new products for the collection of Carl Auböck Werkstätte (of the studio's vintage products, you'll know the famous tree-tables). Aren't these "money sacks" rather marvellous? I should like to think so ...

Je "like" ...
